EDISON, NJ — What makes the St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team so good? Senior Gavin Sansone believes the answer lies in their relentless energy and the unexpected contributions from their youngest players.
“It’s always our energy,” Sansone said. “Everyone feeds into it. We get hyped up, and our underclassmen always come through when we need them. We’ve got a lot of seniors, so I’ll admit—I didn’t expect so many younger guys to step up like this.”
That contagious enthusiasm and team-first spirit were on full display Thursday in the high-stakes NJSIAA North Non-Public B semifinal, where the Trojans outlasted Gill St. Bernard’s, 7-5.
Second-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas will now face No. 5 Rutgers Prep in the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. Rutgers Prep advanced by narrowly edging top-seeded St. Mary’s, 2-1, in the other semifinal.
Senior ace Sansone was instrumental in Thursday’s win, tossing 6 1/3 innings of relief. He reached the 110-pitch limit in the top of the seventh inning with one out and a runner on first, finishing with one hit allowed, four walks, and eight strikeouts. That’s when freshman Nikash Patel stepped into the spotlight, displaying the poise and talent that have come to define the Trojans’ underclassmen.
Patel inherited a bases-loaded, two-out jam—a situation that would test any pitcher, let alone a first-year player. But he delivered. Despite the enormous pressure, Patel gave up just a single and a walk before inducing a game-ending groundout, much to the delight of the STA faithful.
St. Thomas Aquinas coach Tom D’Agostino praised his players and assistant coaches after the semifinal win. “Today, we just went out and executed the game plan they had put together. And we’re not finished yet. We’re really excited about this opportunity.”
Coach D’Agostino also highlighted the team’s grit and battle-tested experience. “These guys have been in some fights. We’ve had some tough losses that put us in must-win situations. Today was a real test, and they passed with flying colors. I couldn’t be prouder of every coach and player in that dugout.”
This season, the Trojans have been powered by a blend of senior leadership and youthful energy, with freshmen stepping up when it mattered most. That mix of veteran know-how and new talent has allowed the team to handle high-pressure moments with poise and confidence.
