Rutherford Triumphs Over Bernards in North 2 Group 2 Final
RUTHERFORD, NJ — Payton Lewis, a rookie shortstop from Rutherford High School, delivered a performance to remember in Saturday’s North 2, Group 2 title game against Bernards—even though she entered the contest with a modest .143 batting average. Lewis hadn’t recorded a two-hit game since April 9 and had been mired in a 3-for-20 slump over nine games in May. But against Bernards, she finally rediscovered her rhythm at the plate.

Lewis cleared the fences in left field and right-center field with solo home runs in the third and fifth innings. Paired with junior pitcher Giana Yaniero’s complete-game six-hitter, her heroics powered No. 9 seed Rutherford to a 2-0 shutout over defending section champion Bernards. The Bulldogs’ victory gave them their first section title since 2008 and their first trip to a sectional final since 2012.
Last year, No. 6 Bernards had eliminated Rutherford 7-5 in the quarterfinal round. This year’s win served as sweet redemption for the Bulldogs. Next up, Rutherford will face North 1 champion Ramsey (25-3) in the state semifinal on Tuesday.
Rutherford coach Cherryl Bott described Lewis’s game-changing performance as “pure battle, pure toughness. I don’t think she had gotten a hit in about four weeks. But we just kept working with her and kept her in the lineup. What a day she picked to break out.”
An ecstatic Lewis added, “It means the world to me.”
On June 1, 2024, the Rutherford High School softball team celebrated its North 2 Group 2 championship victory over Bernards. The win marked a monumental turnaround for the Bulldogs, who had gone sixteen years without a section title.

Sixth-seeded Bernards, appearing in their third straight sectional final, finished the season at 18-7 and claimed the Raritan Division crown in the Skyland Conference. Senior pitcher Madison Lardieri turned in a strong performance despite the loss, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
“Maddy Lardieri is a tremendous pitcher. She just left one pitch over the plate, and that girl (Lewis) made her pay,” said Bernards coach Leslie O’Connor, praising her ace. “That’s how the game works—one pitch can change everything. But that pitch doesn’t define her as a pitcher. I thought she threw a really beautiful game.”
O’Connor also took a moment to honor the Bernards seniors and their lasting impact on the program. “Making it to three consecutive sectional finals is nothing to hang your heads about,” she said. “The seniors are leaving this program in a much better place than when they found it.”
Rutherford’s victory was also secured by clutch pitching from Yaniero in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Bernards had two runners on and two outs. Showing poise and efficiency under pressure, she induced a fly out to preserve the 2-0 lead.
As Rutherford prepares to face Ramsey in the state semifinal, the Bulldogs can draw confidence from their latest performance and the resilience they’ve displayed all season long. For Payton Lewis and her teammates, the win over Bernards stands as a testament to their hard work, grit, and dedication—setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting next chapter in their championship chase.
