Zimmerli Summer Art Camp Returns July 1

For kids aged 7 to 14, the university art museum is offering a range of workshops.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The Rutgers University–New Brunswick Zimmerli Art Museum is thrilled to announce the return of its Summer Art Camp, offering young artists a chance to develop their skills and explore their creative side. This year’s camp provides weekly sessions across a range of subjects for children ages 7–10 (currently full, but waitlist available) and 11–14. The camp will run from July 1 through August 2 at 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick, N.J.

According to Claire D’Amato, associate curator of education at the Zimmerli, new instructors joining the team will allow the camp to offer more courses this year that incorporate different media. Additionally, artwork created at the camp will be showcased on August 10 at Monument Square Park during the New Brunswick Heart Festival.

Returning and New Classes

A brand-new course this year is “Comics, Clay, and Cardboard: Imagination Unleashed!” This session is perfect for anyone who loves drawing cartoons, superheroes, or imaginative art. Students will study character design, color theory, and shape language while working with both 2D and 3D media to create their own original characters and stories.

Other exciting courses include:

  • En Plein Air: Drawing from the Impressionist tradition of painting outdoors, students will use sunlight and nature as their creative muse, drawing and painting outside while experimenting with different artistic materials.
  • Experimental Painting and Weaving: Students are encouraged to explore various materials and media—including paints, collages, dry clay, paper, textiles, and mixed media. A wide range of activities will support young artists in expressing themselves creatively.
  • Now Let’s Start Popping: Another new offering, this class dives into the vibrant world of Pop Art through the works of artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Yayoi Kusama. Inspired by these creators, students will produce bold, eye-catching 2D and 3D projects. (Currently waitlist only.)

D’Amato emphasized that the camp’s goals are to connect local families with the museum and make art accessible to everyone. “We hope our camp helps children find their creative voice and develop interests that will last a lifetime,” she said.
